What is sustainability?

Sustainability is being able to sustain something at a specific rate or level with the avoidance of the depletion of our natural resources to maintain an ecological balance. This process causes a lasting effect on our environment and the people. We can better sustain our resources to provide a better environment for the Earth and its resources to be plentiful for the future.

Perspective

We’re going to look at some numbers to give you a better understanding of the effects that we have on the Earth and its natural resources which will allow for a better understanding and a different perspective. We will also get into specific way on how to be better sustainable. CO2 has held a significant footprint so that we will start there. On average, a person can account for approximately 10-20 tons of CO2 emissions, annually.

A regular passenger vehicle can accumulate up to 12,500 miles per year which are at least 5 tons of CO2 each year. In the process of heating and cooling a home a person can generate 5 to 6 tons of CO2, and this is only accumulated within a year. With these two items, an individual can account for half of a typical person CO2 footprint. It is imperative for us to see what a tremendous impact this has on the environment and how it would impact us significantly by reducing the emissions.

The Solution

Now that we have an overview of what the average person’s footprint consists of you will be able to calculate your carbon footprint this is necessary to understand how you affect the environment and what you can do to make the needed changes, and how to implement them with your everyday usage of things. You will be able to create ideas on how to lower your adverse effects on the environment.

The most significant sources of our carbon footprint are home heating/cooling, home electricity use, and transportation. If you were to switch to a “green energy” provider, it would have a tremendous effect on the environment. It would reduce the CO2 footprint and save money.

Conclusion

We can make a significant impact on our environment if only we just took the time to see how we affect the Earth with our choices. Our choices might not always harm the Earth, but you can leave a lasting impression with the steps that you make. So, make the correct choices so that we can have our natural resources for many lifetimes.
