Rethinking consumption in the age of consumerism

Rethinking consumption in the age of consumerism

Nowadays people sometimes go shopping while they’re in their feelings or not such a great mood. It has been shown that shopping creates more stress in some cases, and it doesn’t necessarily lighten the atmosphere, but it adds more pressure to an already stressful situation. We must be able to rethink our consumption in the age of consumerism. People are losing site of spending time with friends instead of just shopping online or in stores, and they’re missing the ability to communicate without using a computer but doing it in person.  We are losing the way to achieve life goals without being consumed with the idea of making immediate purchases without thinking of the ramifications that these swift decisions are making. We are obsessed with the idea that we can make life better and with material goods instead of just living life and communicating with others and not consumer goods.

American holidays are losing their purpose of celebrating these special events and time with friends and family. Now gift shopping has become the priority at hand. People are spending hours at stores and on lines to get into these stores to get bargain goods or to buy something for the regular price. It is taking away from family time and how people take the time to make family time the priority. In losing sight of how imperative it is to communicate with one another on a constant basis rather than just buying gifts for one another. We should be placing emphasis on the family and our friends not just on material goods.

The essential factor in understanding is that the priority lies within the home and our friends. We need to lose the thought that consumer goods fulfill our desires and want by purchasing something that is material can fill the void of our need for communication. We must structure our lives differently. Goods don’t make us, but it sure can break the need for the family if we spend most of our time focusing on buying unnecessary things that can lead to becoming unsustainable because we don’t necessarily need these goods and we just throw them away in the long run and fill-up landfills which kills our environments.

The video that I have added to Ray Anderson: The business logic of sustainability. Is discussing the business and industry of sustainability and the effects that it has on our wellbeing and the importance of making important decisions for the earth and our future on the planet. People must start making contextual decisions based on sustainability. It also discusses the impacts that sustainability has on our environment and being able to understand the importance of becoming sustainable.
